I just don't have time to complete this.  I need an example of how to communicate via Java to a serial port.  The Java object should simply pass on whatever is given to it from AIR/AS3 and send it to the only serial port on the PC.

Should take from AIR and pass on to Serial port.

I would think you would need to leverage MERAPI and the Javacomm package from Sun, but I am not positive.

Please include instructions on what needs to be installed and everything to get this up and running as a demo.

Ultimately, we will be sending data to a MAX7219 LED driver IC.
