I am currently building plans to launch a new travel based social networking site of which you can find the description below. I am flexible on time and budget, but do not have extreme funding for this site. Functionality is key, and will need to incorporate the features listed below in order to support affiliate marketing.

-Need to incorporate functions of Seat Guru site as well as similar function of Facebook and CouchSurfing.

Who’s Sitting Next to Me.com is a free travel based social networking site which aims to maximize the time spent on board an airplane. The mission of the site is to allow enthusiastic users to not only connect with other members virtually, but in reality by providing a platform in which travelers can exchange seat information for upcoming travel. Users will create profiles to be viewed by other members, and have control over how much information to share. They will be able to add buddies and make public any upcoming travel. Users will add tags to their profile such as interests, music and movie tastes, relationship status, and teaching/learning possibilities. All of these features will allow users the option of finding out the seat number of other passengers traveling on the same flight. Users of this site will be veteran or new travelers, who are interested in interesting conversation, teaching a fellow passenger a skill, learning from a fellow passenger, dating, or merely the knowledge that will not be sitting next to three crying babies. In addition, solo travelers will be able to communicate with other travelers in order to take advantage of airline promotions which require two tickets to be purchased.

Features of the site should include member profiles, ability to search a range of upcoming flights and see which and how many fellow members are planning to be on board those flights. The ability to directly purchase flights, and the ability to see seat plans for all flights. There will also be a messaging system and forums on the site.

I am thinking it would be easiest to start with the PhpFox package for the social networking and features, and then you would continue to customize the site from there, thus saving alot of programming work.
